Frugal Living: 8 Indulgences for the that are good for the soul

Frugal living can be so great. It can also be difficult and a lot of work, and indulgenceless (is that word?). When you’re never spending any money on things that you don’t need, personal care is usually one of the first things that are cut. But your strict and frugal budget doesn’t mean you don’t have to go without some self care.

In order to feel refreshed, there are small things you can do for yourself and you’ll be surprised at how far these small moments can take your soul. I used to think that I needed to go out a week long vacation where I could do spa days, treatments, bask in the sun, and eat all of the best food in order to feel refreshed.  I’ve realized that it’s better to do small things along the way than to reach burnout where you have to spend money doing something extreme to feel sane again.

Here are 8 things you can start doing that are free and will make you feel like a million bucks:

1. Naps

I know it’s really hard to make the time for this. If I have some free time to nap, it’s the last thing I want to do because there’s so much that needs to get done. There are kids to keep alive, calls to return, house work to do, errands to run, or if I’m really caught up, a show I want to watch. This is why a nap is such a luxury and an indulgence. Schedule one, it is the luxury you need. Nap tip: if your mind is running and thinking of all you need to do, write it all down. This way you won’t worry you’ll forget to get it done after your nap, you can put it out of your mind and relax.

2. Bubble baths

frugal indulgence

Throw in some bath salts, turn on some music, and grab a drink you’ll enjoy, welcome to heaven! I feel like a million bucks after a bath. The best combo

, if you can swing it, is to take a bath and take a nap afterward. Since it can be difficult to nap, a bath beforehand really relaxes everything and makes it so much easier. This is such lovely self care and can be done in the evening after the kids are in bed.

3. Read (outside if weather is permitting)

Your soul craves space in your mind for creativity. Let your mind tell you a story by reading a good book.

4. Yoga

Yoga has so many benefits and this is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Skip the pricey class and follow one online, here’s one to check out: https://www.yogabycandace.com/yoga-videos/

frugal living - shop your closet5. Shop your closet

This is one of my favorites! Resist the Urge to Splurge and shop in your own closet. I struggle with always feeling like I have nothing to wear and want to buy new clothes. Instead, spend some time going through your clothes and putting together new outfits out of what you already have. You’ve probably been overlooking something you’ve owned for a long time. You’ll feel like you have a new wardrobe without having spent any money.

6. Meditate and/or journal

Again, your soul craves space in your mind. Give it this space and take 5-10 minutes to yourself to sit quietly with your thoughts and process. I love writing things down, I find that it helps me make some order of the chaos in my mind. Journaling doesn’t necessary have to be in diary format. I often make lists and write down my goals and what I hope to accomplish. I also find journaling greatly helps me stay on track for my goals, which is the best indulgence I can ask for! See how I keep my goals here.

7. Find free events for a date night

Good ol’ Google can help you with this. Look up what’s going on in your city and check out the free events. Make it a date night, this is a great idea to mix up dinner and a movie (not that I don’t love those dates either!). Doing something new together is a great, frugal way to indulge in what life has to offer.

8. Self spa treatment:

Pinterest has all of the recipes you need to find a hair and face mask out of ingredients that you already own. Throw on a robe and have a mini self spa treatment. Grab some tea with lemon water, put a hair and face mask on, and paint your toes. Put on some relaxing music and run some essential oils or burn a nicely scented candle.

What are some free indulgences that make you feel like you’re living a life of luxury on a frugal budget?
